Man allegedly murdered woman to cover sexual assaults

GRANDVIEW, MO (KCTV) -

A 23-year-old Grandview man has been charged in the death of a woman who, according to prosecutors, he said he killed because he was worried she would tell that he and others had sexually assaulted her.

Micah Moore faces a charge of first-degree murder.

Court documents said Bethany Deaton's body was found Oct. 30 about 9:40 p.m. in the passenger's side rear seat of a van parked near Longview Lake. She was found near the shelter house No. 12 with a trash bag over her head and a note that suggested suicide:

"My name is Bethany Deaton. I chose this evil thing. I did it because I wouldn't be a real person and what is the point of living if it is too late for that? I wish I had chosen differently a long time ago. I knew it all and refused to listen. Maybe Jesus will save me."

Along with the note, according to court documents, Jackson County sheriff's deputies also found two bottles of Acetaminophen PM, one was unopened and the other was empty.

Friday, Moore came to the Grandview Police Department and told them he was involved in Bethany Deaton's death.

"I killed her," he said, according to police records.

Court documents said Moore told sheriff's deputies while being interviewed that he killed Bethany Deaton because, while she and her husband, Tyler Deaton, had shared a home with Moore and several other men, they had sexually assaulted Bethany Deaton over the last few months. Bethany Deaton was seeing a therapist and the men were afraid she was going to tell her therapist about the assaults.

Moore admitted to being at Longview Lake with Bethany Deaton and putting the bag over her head and holding it there until her "body shook". He said that Bethany Deaton had been given Seroquel, a prescription anti-psychotic, during the sexual assaults and in a water bottle the day of her murder.

A pastor for International House of Prayer told police she had talked with Moore and he had told her about the sexual assaults. He told the pastor they were video recorded on his iPad as well as poems which he and the other men wrote about the assaults.

Interviews with roommates of the Deatons revealed that they all belonged in the same "religious community" and, apparently, many were having sexual relations with one another. Court documents said all called Tyler Deaton their "spiritual leader".

Prosecutors requested a bond for Moore of $500,000.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
