PAULDEN, AZ (CBS5) -

The driver of vehicle pulling a horse trailer escaped injury in a collision with a freight train in Paulden on Sunday.

Two horses and a dog were killed and a second dog was injured.

The driver, a 71-year-old Paulden resident, told Yavapai County sheriff's deputies he did not see the Burlington Northern Sante Fe train or hear the whistle as he crossed the tracks on Verde Ranch Road at about 7:20 a.m.

The driver, who was not named, said that the vision from his vehicle was limited because the windows were iced over, YCSO said. The impact dislodged the trailer from the truck hitch pushing it along the tracks.

The train crew verified a horn was sounded prior to approaching the crossing as required, but the truck did not stop, deputies said. The crew initiated an emergency stop system and continued to sound the horn, according to sheriff's investigators.

The truck made it across, but the horse trailer was still centered over the track and struck by the leading locomotive which carried it along the tracks. The train contained three front-end locomotives, more than 80 cars full of grain and a rear locomotive.

The driver was cited for failure to stop at a railroad crossing. BNSF investigators also arrived at the scene to gather evidence, statements and recorded data from the locomotive.
