Power of Prayer: Church under a bridge

By Dia Wall dwall@kltv.com

It's a cold fall Sunday morning at one service in East Texas, but the spirits and the coffee are nice and hot.

The Church Under A Bridge started just nine months ago and it's already making its mark.

Senior Pastor Jabo Thomas says "We don't have a building. That makes it different. We just love people for who they are. We don't care what they look like or what they're dressed in. We just want them to know that we love them and God loves them."

People start gathering an hour before the service, catching up over breakfast like the close friends they are.

Church member Brittany LaNasa says it is "a family atmosphere, which is awesome."

Member Willie Howard Andrews, Jr. tells us that he thinks the music is the best part, saying "If I'm in a heavy mood, it gives me joy."

The Church Under A Bridge is a home away from home for a lot of its visitors.

And its ministry goes far beyond what you see on a Sunday morning.

Pastor Thomas tells us "We provide them material things like clothes, food, toiletry items, helping them find work and stuff like that. The Church Under the Bridge means to me that Tyler is really reaching out to the homeless, the disenfranchised, the hopeless."

Pastor Thomas says it's not about him, but about sharing the power of prayer and faith.

"I think the most important thing about this place is that we're going to be here constantly every Sunday no matter what because we believe that they're worth it," Pastor Thomas says.

In addition to breakfast, lunches are also provided for visitors thanks to a weekly donation from Panera Bread.

If you'd like to visit the Church Under A Bridge, Pastor Thomas says come as you are, they'll be starting around 10 A.M. Sunday.

The church meets at 300 East Valentine Street in north Tyler.
