Leighá Hughes joined the KTRE News Team in October 2012 as a reporter. She graduated cum laude from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor's in Broadcast Journalism and minor in Psychology.
She learned the ropes of the news business at the student-run news station, KSHU-TV 7. Leighá received the American Women in Radio and Television Scholarship her junior year and was honored with the Outstanding Mass Communication Student award at graduation.
While in college, she worked for ExxonMobil Corporation in Houston as a Special Events Coordinator, where she planned fundraising events and raised money for the United Way of Greater Houston. Philanthropy is close to her heart and she looks forward to getting involved in the local community.
Leighá interned at KTRK ABC 13 in Houston and Studio Communications, a boutique Public Relations firm. She started her broadcast career at the ABC affiliate in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and enjoyed learning about the Midwest but is glad to be closer to home.
Leighá is a native Houstonian and is excited about exploring East Texas and getting to know the community. When she's not out chasing a story, Leighá enjoys reading and exercising. Running, rollerblading, kickboxing, you name it. She loves music and has been playing the guitar since she was 10 but admits she doesn't get to play as much as she would like.
