Hundreds turn out for Highway 80's Thanksgiving feast

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A local organization has worked to provide a Thanksgiving feast for more than 500 people.

The Hiway 80 Rescue Mission served East Texans in Longview and for the first time, Tyler.

Nearly 200 Tyler residents came out to the Tyler location to receive complimentary meals.

Volunteers served up all the fixings to a crowded room at West Erwin Church of Christ. Highway 80 organizers have spent an entire year expanding their reach in Tyler.

Their Longview location was just as busy. About 300 people filled their plates with the traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, stuffing, a few sides and even pumpkin pie.

"You know, a lot of people are having a tough time, but this is a time where we're family. We cannot just share a meal, but we can love folks that might be hurt and that's an honor for us to be able to do," said Eric Burger, the executive director of Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.

Last year in Tyler, they only served a meal on Christmas. Organizers say about 50 people turned out for the Christmas dinner. All the food was provided through financial donations to Highway 80.

"Besides this meal, we have an office [in Tyler]. We are providing housing to people here... often that's setting them up in Longview. It has been a long haul, but we're getting established here to help the needy in Tyler," Burger said.
