While many people were out late last night grabbing last minute Black Friday deals, local merchants in the historic downtown Nacogdoches were gearing up for a special day of their own: "Small Business Saturday."
Shop owners celebrated the third annual shopping holiday, which was created by American Express in 2010 to drive shoppers to local merchants across the United States.,by offering several sales, food and entertainment to customers.
Sarah O' Brien, the Communications Manager and Director for Nacogdoches Main Street, says she likes to encourage locals to shop in their hometown, especially during the holidays.
"Well, I like to tell people to put their money where their house is. When you shop local, you're supporting your local government and you're supporting your local business owners who give back to the community and hire local employees and it's just an all around benefit for everybody," O'Brien said.
This is the second year Nacogdoches has participated in the event. O'Brien says even though they are new to the national movement, she has seen increased foot traffic to the downtown district. She says alot of that has to do with the city's Nine Flags Christmas Festival and Wassail Fest, but that alot of it has to do with visitors getting to know the store owners on days like "Small Business Saturday."
