Commerce Police investigate fatal stabbing

Commerce Police are investigating a homicide after a man died from stab wounds at a Hunt County hospital.

Just before 12:25 a.m., the Commerce Police Department received a call from the Hunt Regional Community Hospital about a stabbing victim who had been brought to the emergency room.

The victim, 20-year-old Jamal Stanton of Greenville had a single stab wound to his upper left chest, according to officers that arrived at the hospital.

Hospital Personnel performed life saving measures, but were unable to revive Stanton and he was pronounced dead a short time later by JP Jennifer Reeves. An autopsy was ordered.

Investigators with Commerce PD and the Texas Rangers were called in to investigate this death.

Commerce Police say just before the call was received from Hunt Regional Community Hospital-ER, an anonymous call of a fight in the Cul-de-sac at Tarter apartments was received by dispatch.  The caller told dispatch that there was a fight in the "circle" and a person was being taken to the emergency room.

Investigators have determined that the two calls are related.

A person of interest in the case has been detained. Investigators will release more information as it becomes available.
