ETX school up to #6 in contest for brand new playground

Many of you may remember spending recess outside on the jungle gym, but that is not an option for students at one East Texas elementary school.

Clorox's "Power A Bright Future" grant contest could fix this problem for Arp Elementary.

The school is in the running to win a $50,000 grant for a brand new playground.

After KLTV ran this story, Arp Elementary School moved up to #23 on the list. They currently sit at #6.

They are counting on their East Texas community to give them the votes they need for this brand new playground.

You can vote for the East Texas school once every 24 hours by texting 2216pbf to 95248. You can also vote online by clicking here.

Right now, students in grades 2 through 5 spend their recess playing in an open lot.

"They play in the dirt a lot," laughed music teacher Patricia Parnell who is fighting to win the new playground.

She said the students are limited to what they can do at recess.

"We have play equipment, but it's not like swings or slides. It's just hula hoops, balls and jump ropes," said fourth-grade student, Macey Maxwell.

Arp is the only nominee from East Texas and is running against 508 other schools nationwide.

"I'm excited. I hope we do win," Macey said.
