Canton businesses counting on good turnout at Canton Trade Days

CANTON, TX (KLTV) -
It is time for Canton' First Monday Trade Days and local businesses could not be happier.

"Eighty percent of business we do in three days," said Mel Melchizedek, General Manager of Canton's Quality Inn and Suites.

"That's the same with a lot of the businesses here in town; they are fueled by first Monday," added front desk manager, Liz Atteberry.

It is the last show before the holidays and we thought there would be shoppers shoulder to shoulder trying to get some last minute Christmas gifts. However, several people say the previous First Monday Trade Days that fell earlier this month might have December's beat.

"It wasn't as busy today as it was earlier this month in November," explained shopper Jean Duvall.

Kathy Foster, the General Manager at the Canton Marketplace, said last month's show brought in an estimated 300,000 people.

"We had a waiting list just four or five pages long. People were calling, 'Do you have availability?' We had zero," explained Atteberry.

Many shoppers and vendors book their hotel room months in advance.

Atteberry took a call for a woman wanting to book a room for Canton Trade Days in October 2013.

Cheryl Clower and Vicki Harvey learned that lesson the hard way.

"We've gone to almost Tyler before if you don't book ahead to get a room," Harvey explained.

Day one may have been a little slow, but traffic is expected to pick up.

"We expect around 400,000 since it's the last one before Christmas," Foster said.

With numbers like that, canton can expect another weekend of heavy traffic.
