Police say they are considering criminal charges if the mother of an 11-year-old girl with leukemia doesn't return her to a Phoenix hospital.
Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said officers would first need to speak with Norma Bracamontes, 35, as to her intent or motive.
The girls' father, Luis Bracamontes, 46, was stopped at the Arizona border and questioned by U.S. Border Patrol agents Saturday night, Martos said.
Bracamontes was not driving the Ford mini-van last seen leaving Phoenix Children's Hospital Wednesday night, Martos said.
"Luis provided no valuable information regarding Emily or her mother's whereabouts," Martos said.
CBS 5 News spoke on the phone Monday night with the girl's grandmother and aunt in San Jose, CA. They said they didn't know anything in connection with the case. One of them said, "I can't talk to you right now" and hung up.
Emily was undergoing leukemia treatment when her mother pulled an IV from a catheter placed in the girl's heart and walked her out of the facility. Doctors said if the catheter is not medically removed, the her heart could potentially become infected, resulting in her death.
Police said Luis Bracamontes denied being involved in removing her from the hospital.
Martos said because police have so little information, they decided to release the parents' last names in hopes their identities might generate some fresh leads.
On Tuesday, the hospital released the following statement:
"Phoenix Children's Hospital is deeply concerned about Emily's safety and well-being and continues to cooperate with law enforcement. However, we are prohibited by federal law from sharing a patient's or family's private medical and financial information.
"We are committed to providing high quality, family-centered care. If Emily's family has questions about her care, we encourage open communication and discussion of options with the care team. Clinical decisions are not based on ability to pay.
"We encourage anyone who has information about Emily's whereabouts or who is contacted by Emily's family, including media outlets, to immediately notify law enforcement by calling Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (948-6377)."
