East Texans react to Costas's gun control remarks

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - The sportscaster Bob Costas addressed the Saturday shooting deaths of the Kansas City Chiefs' linebacker Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend, Kassandra Perkins, during halftime of the Sunday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night.

Costas, quoting from an article written by Kansas City sportswriter Jason Whitlock, said in part: "Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.

"In the coming days, Jovan Belcher's actions and their possible connections to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

Some East Texans today disagreed both with what Costas said and where he said it.

"Guns don't lead to violence. People do," said Whitehouse resident David Wharton. "It's actions people do. If he didn't have a gun, he could have had a knife. He could have used his hands, he could have used a chair or anything. Guns do not create the evil."

"As someone who has been in the military, I certainly defend his right to say that," said Whitehouse resident Nathan Page. "But also with great rights come great responsibility, and I just think that there is a time and a place to say everything. I don't think that a person should politicize an issue one way or another."

NBC has not commented on Costas's remarks.
