No water in Overton...still

Posted: Updated:
OVERTON, TX (KLTV) -

A burst pipe left the city of Overton without water most of the day today.

It happened around 2 in the morning near the intersection of FM 850 and County Road 128.

Some Overton business had to shut down, and Overton schools sent students home early.

Overton classrooms were empty by noon. Superintendent Alan Umholz had porta-potties brought in, but had to notify parents and call the school buses in.

High School Principal Stephen DuBose said about the only people left on campus were maintenance.

"We just have to make sure that nothing blows up when the pressure comes back up. They've done that before. It happens sometimes and they've taken care of it," Principal DuBose stated.

It happened several times last year, and the school was forced to use bad weather days, but today they didn't use one since the students were in class long enough for attendance to count.

"We were sitting at our desks and the principal said we had no water," said Britney Rojo.

The kids went home, or in this case to their dad's restaurant, Herraduras, where they waited for water to open for business. They've been open a year and a half, and this is the second time it has happened to Marco Rojo.

He said, "They have old pipes and, it's an old town, too, I guess."

After the pipe is patched and the broken chunk removed, there is still more to do.

"The lines have to be bled out, get the air out and then put fresh water into the system," Overton City Manager Joe Cantu explained.

The water department believes ground shift may have caused the pipe to crack.

City Manager Joe Cantu says all the leaks in the system have been taken care of except for one. That one will be fixed as soon as they have clearance from TXDOT. Once water pressure returns, a boil water notice is in effect.
