LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

A Texas A&M football player could make history in New York this weekend. Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, affectionately known as "Johnny Football," is the odds on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday in New York City. If he wins, he would be the first freshman Heisman Trophy winner ever.

Elusive and innovative, Johnny Manziel has brought a riverboat gambler's quality to college football. His father, Paul, is general manager at Fenton Honda in Longview, and joined us on the phone from Orlando.

"Its wonderful. I'm really glad he got to show his talent at this level and that he's taken advantage of it, couldn't ask for anything more," he said.

Paul says he always knew there was something special with Johnny.

"He's an amazing athlete and just a God-given talent. We knew if we could make a man out of him, the rest would take care of itself and he's done a great job and we couldn't be prouder of him," Paul says.

Paul feels toppling then-number one Alabama put Johnny on map.

"It was very emotional at the end. We all had tears in our eyes. College Station has taken to it and it seems like the whole country has," he says.

He feels confident Johnny will win.

"I feel like it will, I think the stage is set. He's had a wonderful year and what a kid . I'm just so proud of him," said the elder Manziel. "It seems like we live in a country where everybody wants a hero and if you go out and do some amazing things and get recognized, they'll put you up on a pedestal,"

He says the redshirt freshman has been very grounded, considering the whirlwind surrounding him.

"He's very humble. I don't think he knows he had a great year, but he sure didn't think he'd be in this position this early," says Paul.

Thursday is Johnny Manziel's 20th birthday. His family will be flying to New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation on Saturday night.
