Debunking Texas flag history gossip

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

It is a bit of Texas history gossip that has been passed down since Texas joined the Union: that the Texas flag is the only state flag that can fly at the same height as the United States flag.

But according to a flag expert and history professor at Texas College, that's only half true.

"Texas, along with every other state, has the right to  fly their flag at the same height as the American flag as long as they are on separate poles," Gary Paul said.

Paul explains that if the flags are both on one pole, then the U.S. flag must go on top, but if they are on separate poles, then any state flag can fly as high, but not higher than the U.S. flag.
