GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A man was killed around 8:00 this morning after he was hit by a car on Highway 135 at Crews Road in Gregg County. That is about halfway between Highway 271 and I-20.

DPS has confirmed that the victim is 50-year-old Darrell Cannon of Gladewater.

According to DPS, the driver is 20-year-old Stormy Scott, a Kilgore College student. She was driving a 2005 Nissan Murano.

Scott said she fell asleep at the wheel and went off the road. She also told DPS she thought she hit a mailbox and kept going. Another vehicle stopped her and she returned to the scene.

Cannon's body was taken to Crowley Funeral Home in Kilgore.

DPS told KLTV this afternoon that they are pursuing a charge of criminally negligent homicide against Scott..Troopers say Cannon was at least five feet off the roadway, following state law, and there was "nothing he could have done differently".

Criminally negligent homicide is punishable by up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000.
