SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Friday night a vigil was held for an East Texas firefighter who passed away this week.

Jalen Smith died on Monday from injuries he suffered from a wreck on Nov. 30.

Twenty year old Jalen Smith and two other Jackson Heights Firefighters were on their way to another crash when the wreck occurred on Farm to Market Road 2767 in Smith County.

The vigil was held Friday evening at the Jackson Heights Volunteer Fire Department Number 2 on Highway 31 East. Friends, family and fellow firefighters spoke at the vigil.

Maurice McNoe, Captain of the Jackson Heights Volunteer Fire Department said the outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming.

"For all the firefighters and for the community all over the world and East Texas to come out here and show their support. It's amazing," McNoe said.

Jalen Smith's funeral will be held Saturday, December 8th, at the Green Acres Baptist Church at 1PM. A public viewing will be held before the funeral from 11:30AM to 12:45PM.
