UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas man is sentenced to a lengthy prison stay, connected to assault and drunk driving.

58-year-old Joseph Donald Smith was arrested in July after an incident where he rammed another vehicle on highway 271. Troopers found that he was intoxicated.

He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony driving while intoxicated. Records show Smith had over a half-dozen arrests for DWI.

A judge assessed life in prison for the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge and 50-years in prison for the felony driving while intoxicated charge.

Smith will have to serve at least 30-years before he is eligible for parole.
