Moment of silence to be held for victims of Newtown school shooting

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has declared Friday a "Day of Mourning" and is asking all residents to hold a statewide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. in honor of the victims of the school shooting in Newtown.

Adam Lanza, 20, shot and killed his mother as she slept in her bed and then went to the school Friday morning where he proceeded to shoot and kill 20 children, between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults before shooting himself in the head.

The governor is expected to ring bells 26 times for all the victims. He has also requested all religious and government buildings to have size for all its members.

"Let us all come together collectively to mourn the loss of far too many promising lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School," Malloy said in the letter Tuesday. "Though we will never know the full measure of sorrow experienced by these families, we can let them know that we stand with them during this difficult time."

Malloy also sent a letter to every governor in the United States to have them consider a moment of reflection and mourning in their states.

"Mourning this tragedy has extended beyond Newtown, beyond the borders of Connecticut, and has spread across the nation and the world," he said. "On behalf of the State of Connecticut, we appreciate the letters and calls of support that have been delivered to our state and to the family members during their hour of need."
