Joan Hallmark shares the stories of her career in new book

Posted: Updated:

East Texans have watched Joan Hallmark unfold the stories of heroes and history for 40 years.

"We've been watching a long time, she knows how to figure out the good stories out there, " says Robert Bailey, who bought Joan's book as a Christmas gift.

"It's been a long journey in this business and it's so great really to have all of these memories," says Joan Hallmark, author and journalist.

And now, Joan has put those memories and stories into a book, titled Sound Bites.

"From what I hear about the book these are the stories she's been bringing us for years and some of the inside stories that you always kind of wonder about," says Bailey.

Joan says the book didn't take long to write because there's always more to share about someone's story than time allows.

"We do interviews or we do stories and it's all melted down into a minute and a half, two minutes, so there's always some little behind the scenes situations and yes they're in there too," says Joan.

Joan's book covers her time reporting in Dallas, where she hosted the Joan Hallmark show, as well as her time here at KLTV in Tyler.

But her fondest memories aren't necessarily from her big name interviews.

"There have been a lot of famous people, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood and so forth, and that's been exciting but it's also been exciting all the East Texans that I've met and the freedom fighters and the fact that they've shared their stories with me. It's very gratifying," Joan says.

Still Joan has one regret.

"I was not able to access scripts on everybody I have done stories on and so I had to leave people out that I really wanted in there. I wanted everybody in there because it's pretty special when someone shares their story with you," says Joan.

It's those special stories, and the award-winning storyteller behind them, that keep people tuning in to hear Joan Hallmark.

You can buy Joan's book at Barron's in Longview, at several places in Tyler and also on
