East Texans honor Sandy Hook victims at candlelight vigil

A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night at the Children's Park in Tyler.

27 names were read aloud, one for every victim of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting.

A candle was also lit in each victim's memory.

"I have kids and it's kind of sad that it had to be kids," says Bianez Mendez, a mom who brought her family to the vigil.

Many other families also came to the park to honor the victims and pray for the families who won't get to spend Christmas with those who lost their lives.

"I think when something like this happens people don't really know what to do with it," says Jennifer Carson, one of the organizers of the vigil.

Carson knows what it's like to lose a child. She build the Children's Park in honor of her son and decided it was the perfect place to remember the Connecticut shooting victims.

"It gives our community a chance to come together and support one another, as well as support the families and praying for them in Connecticut," Carson says.

"It's what the Children's Park is all about; hope, peace for the future and good will towards men," says Shannon Johnson, a mother who has also lost a son.

Johnson lit candles at the vigil and says she hopes those who came leave with hope for a better future.

It wasn't clear what the crowd was hoping for but it was clearly an emotional event.

Carson says it's an event she wants to share.

"I just would love the families in Connecticut to know that we support them and that we are so sorry for their losses," says Carson.

A candlelight vigil for the Connecticut shooting victims was also held in downtown Mineola tonight.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
