ICE detainee dies at Phoenix hospital

A Guatemalan man in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement died on Sunday at a Phoenix hospital from what authorities believe was diabetes complications.

ICE officials said Manuel Cota-Domingo, 34, was being detained at the Eloy Detention Center when he was rushed to the Florence Anthem Hospital in Florence on Dec. 20. ICE officials said Cota-Domingo was complaining of chest pains.

ICE officials said doctors determined his condition was caused from untreated diabetes. ICE officials said when Cota-Domingo was detained on Dec. 12 he received two routine medical screenings but did not disclose his health condition until after he became ill.

On Dec. 22, Cota-Domingo was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix and passed away the next day.

Cota-Domingo had been scheduled to be sent back to Guatemala on Dec. 26.
