NWS classifies Houston Co. tornado as EF3

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say an EF-3 tornado destroyed a feed store and several homes in Houston County.

The two meteorologists out of Houston came to the scene Wednesday to survey Tuesday's damage.

An EF3 is defined as having winds between speeds of 136 and 165 mile-per-hour.

Tornadoes are classified between six categories.

The tornado destroyed a feed store and several homes in the Pennington area, according to Don Oettinger.

Oettinger said the path of destruction was "larger than normal" for tornadoes in the area. Most are EF0 or EF1.

An EF3 damaged many homes in Lufkin in December 2009.
