PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A couple running a home daycare business where a 2-year-old girl died in 2012 has been indicted.

Maricopa County prosecutors said Monday that a grand jury indicted Ryan Reed and Allison Clement on charges of second-degree and child abuse.

They said Reed also was charged with two counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

The couple was arrested in connection with the Dec. 11, 2012 death of Savannah Cross.

The couple had been watching Savannah Cross on a full-time basis since October 2012. Reed admitted to abusing the girl by striking, kicking and roughly grabbing the victim, said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department.

Clement told investigators she saw the incidents of abuse but did nothing to intervene and did not seek medical aid for the child's injuries, Crump said.

Crump said the child was pronounced dead at a hospital after she was found not breathing at the home near Southern Avenue and 45th Street.

Crump said the mother of the deceased child often would leave her for days or weeks at a time at the couple's home.

Four other children were in the home at the time of the death, including two belonging to the couple running the home business that is advertised on Craigslist, according to Crump. Clement and Reed's children have been turned over to Child Protective Services.

Reed and Clement were originally indicted for murder and child abuse in December, 2012. Those charges were subsequently dismissed without prejudice in September 2013 when it became apparent that a report from the Office of the Medical Examiner could not be completed by a date certain.

On December 5, 2013, Ryan Reed was charged with one count of sexual conduct with a minor and one count of child abuse in connection with the same victim. These offenses are included in the current indictment.
