PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Many people are headed home after the holiday, but it seems those full body scanners and pat downs aren't deterring some passengers from trying to bring a gun on an airplane, especially in Arizona.

TSA workers confiscated 53 guns from passengers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport alone, and nationwide, it was a record year.

TSA officials said more than 1,500 guns were taken from travelers. That's about four people per day caught trying to get a gun onto a plane.

Out of all the airports in the country, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta confiscated the most guns. In all, 90 guns were found. It's also the busiest airport in the U.S.

Dallas Fort Worth ranked second with 78 guns seized.

Phoenix ranked third.

"In a place where guns are more frequently carried by people, it does not surprise me that more would be confiscated in an airport ... just because they are coming to fly and they are not thinking about it," traveler Kirsten Wollenweber said.

Guns are allowed in checked baggage; however, they must be unloaded and packed in a hard case.

All guns must also be declared to the airline at check-in.
