Carolina, Clemson fans boast of win potential in upcoming bowls

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

If you love college football, then chances are you're really enjoying the slate of bowls coming on television in the next few days.

Of course, Clemson and South Carolina are also playing in bowls on Monday and Tuesday. The buzz around both those games has reached a fever pitch locally.

We checked in with the folks at Jewelry Warehouse, where they keep Clemson and Carolina divided quite literally.

On the garnet and black side, we found Nate Hinton, who's leaving for Tampa on Sunday for the Outback Bowl. He offered up his analysis and prediction for Tuesday's game.

"Well, I think our defense is one of the top defenses in the country," said Hinton. "Michigan hasn't faired too well against tough defenses lately. I look forward to the Gamecocks coming out victoriously again."

For Hinton, the games are like family reunions.

"We gather together like family, and we celebrate, so it's always a good time when you get together with Gamecock fans -- make new friends and new family members," said Hinton.

Manager Phillip Graham says the stream of customers looking for new Gamecock gear to wear to Tampa has been pretty constant.

"Of course anything with out the Outback Bowl on it has been selling extremely well," said Graham. "Anything that the coaches have been wearing on the sidelines like the jackets, visors -- coach Spurrier's visor we've sold ton of -- and just anything with the number 21 and 7 on it."

Over on the Clemson side of the store, we found the same excitement.

"The real Tigers, you know, 'cause LSU is Tigers too, and so is Clemson, so it's the Battle of the Tigers I guess you could say," said fan Daquan Grant.

The biggest seller for Clemson fans has been a shirt calling the Chick-Fil-A Bowl the "Battle Over the Real Death Valley".

"The orange shirt people came in, and that's what they wanted. We have a really good shirt this year for the bowl game, and a lot of people wanted it, and we are running out of sizes and having to send out to get more, so they really like that shirt," said Ginavra Butler, a worker at the store.

If you can't make to Atlanta or Tampa, you can catch both games on ESPN. Clemson will battle LSU at 7:30 p.m. Monday, and the Gamecocks will take on Michigan at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
