LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Decked out with animal heads and Texas memorabilia, Lufkin's newest travel center Fuel City is a sight for sore eyes. The travel center opened in early December and offers customers not only gas, but its world famous tacos and fried pies.
"We've had excellent feedback from so many people and its been really encouraging. We've been super busy and overwhelmed. Everybody working back there has done the best they could possibly do and we've had tremendous feedback from our customers," Danielle Pape, the general manager for Fuel City, said.
Pape says the center's owner, John Benda, hired over 50 employees for its opening but says they are planning on hiring year-round.
"We are continuously taking applications so you can stop in anytime and ask for one of the managers. We can give you an application. I can't promise we have something available right now, but we're always looking to evaluate new people," Pape said.
Denny's restaurant, which is attached to the center, is expected to open January 15 and managers say they have already hired 80 employees for its opening day.
"It's going very well. We're still looking for quite a few cooks and quite a few servers. We'll be here doing interviews tomorrow from 9-to-2 as well, but that's about it. We're just looking for a few cooks and servers and then we'll be finished with our hiring process," Kristi McDaniel, the general manager for Denny's Lufkin, said.
McDaniel says people looking to score a job for the opening should stop by the location tomorrow to grab an application. They will be doing on-site interviews and do not require prior restaurant experience.
"Honestly, they don't have to have any experience. We prefer some experience in the restaurant business and in cooking, but we are willing to employ people who do not have any restaurant experience or cooking experience," McDaniel said.
