Water main break repaired in Bristol ahead of schedule

BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) -

A water main break in Bristol that left dozens of homes without water and caused officials to close an elementary school early was repaired earlier than expected Wednesday.

Crews were called to a water main break on Ivy Drive at about 9 a.m.

Officials at Ivy Drive School dismissed students at noon, and afternoon kindergarten was canceled. The school is expected to be open for normal hours Thursday.

"I'm sure for some families it will be a major inconvenience for childcare because our after-school kids extended care program cannot be held either," said Deputy Superintendents of Schools Sue Moreau. "But, it's not safe to have kids for school if you don't have any water."

However, some parents told Eyewitness News that it was not "a major inconvenience."

"I have a small crew that I pick up every day, so it's not a problem," said one parent.

School officials said the facility still had water Wednesday, but service was shut off once repairs to the main began in the afternoon. About 15 homes were without water because of the break.

According to the Bristol Water Department, work began on the water main at about 12:30 p.m., and by 2:30 p.m., repairs were completed.

"They got to do it and get it fixed," said one unidentified parent. "This road is terrible. The water main breaks here a lot, so they gotta do it."

It's unknown what caused the break, but crews said it is common during the winter months.
