Championship coach leaving Henderson for Pittsburg ISD

HENDERSON, TX (KLTV) -

Two-time state championship coach Dickey Meeks is set to leave the Henderson Lions.  Meeks will become the athletic director and head football coach at Pittsburg High School, pending school board approval on Friday.

"That's an area (Pittsburg) I lived in before I came here and I like the area," said Meeks.  "My wife and I always thought Pittsburg would be a good job.  The timing seemed right."

Meeks will take over a Pittsburg football program coming off a two win season in 2012.  Pittsburg coach Robert Manley stepped down in December.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise.  Meeks led Henderson to the 2010 3A Division I state championship.  The Lions had another strong season in 2012 reaching the state quarterfinals.

"When you go somewhere (Henderson) you want to leave it better than when we came," said Meeks.  "I think we did that."

Meeks is happy to be staying in East Texas where he's led two different programs (Chapel Hill and Henderson) to state championships.  He hopes to make it three in Pittsburg.

"There was no real plan to it," said Meeks.  "There was a plan that my wife and I both wanted to live in that area at some time.  Then the position came open at a good school that a I knew a good bit about."
