Snowstorm eases up after messy morning commute

ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -

A storm that dropped several inches of snow in several areas of Connecticut has finally started to ease up, but not before dozens of crashes and spinouts were reported along Connecticut's interstates, highways and roads.

Officials with the Connecticut Department of Transportation said its entire fleet of 632 trucks plus private contractors were working hard to clear the roads when snow started falling early Wednesday morning. The morning commute was extremely messy, and slick conditions and poor visibility were reported by several viewers.

Motorists were being urged to take it slow to ensure safety while driving, but several crashes and spinouts have been reported. The crashes were reported along Interstate 95, Interstate 84 and along some of the state's highways, which is why motorists were asked to take it slow.

In addition to the difficult driving conditions, dozens of schools and businesses were closed so fewer people would be on the roads.

Winter weather advisories were issued for the entire state in advance of the storm, and those were expected to remain in effect until sometime Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

No flights were scheduled to depart Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks before 6 a.m., and officials there said runways at the state's largest airport were being plowed and cleared. All of the planes at the gates were still expected to depart on time, but airport officials said anyone expected to fly Wednesday is being asked to call the airline directly before heading out to the airport.

Officials with Metro North said customers on the New Haven Line should anticipate eastbound and westbound delays of up to 15 minutes due to congestion in the vicinity east of Westport. Passengers heading into or out of New York City on the New Haven Line are being asked to listen to announcements at your station.

According to the Channel 3 Early Warning Weather Team, a potent area of low pressure started traveling up and along a front that moved through the area Tuesday and stalled offshore. The low pressure system took a track that brought everything from accumulating snow to a wintry mix and cold rain, depending on where in the state you're located.

Light to moderate snow accumulations were expected along and northwest of Interstate 84, which received anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of snow. There was more of a mix to rain southeast of I-84, where residents saw anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of precipitation.
