City Council holds meeting to discuss smoke-free ban

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

High school students from the Drug-Free All Stars Program gathered inside Lufkin's City Hall today to voice their interest in banning public smoking all over Angelina County.

Mayor Bob Brown said that the ban is only an idea now, but Sid Roberts, the medical director at the Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital, says he knows Mayor Brown will pass the ordinance.

"I'm very optimistic that City Council will do the right thing to move forward 100 percent in the smoking ban," Dr. Roberts said.

Nacogdoches implemented a similar city-wide smoking ban in 2008 banning anyone from smoking in any public building within the city limits.

On Monday, city managers said if the ordinance gets passed they are not sure if it will restrict people from smoking outside of public places.
