LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Houston man received a sentence of 5 years in prison Friday. Claude Dewayne Welch, 53, pleaded guilty to felony possession of marijuana before he was sentenced. An Angelina County constable found more than 30 pounds of weed in his car after a traffic stop.

Welch is still being held in the Angelina County jail on a charge of possession of marijuana between 5 and 50 pounds, which is a third-degree felony.

Constable Tom Selman arrested Welch in 2012 following a traffic stop on US Highway 59 north. Welch, who was driving a Mercury Cougar, was clocked doing 83 mph in a 70 mph zone.

When Selman approached the car, he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. After he had Welch get out of the car, the man admitted there was marijuana inside.

Selman found 30.7 bags of marijuana in three different garbage bags under the hatch of the car. Welch was arrested without incident and transported to the Angelina County Jail.
