Angelina County Sheriff's department receives $10,000 grant for breathalyzer machines

Posted: Updated:

The Angelina County Sheriff's department received approval Tuesday from County Judge Wes Suiter for a $10,000 grant that will allow them to buy portable breathalyzer machines for their deputies.

Several County Commissioners say they will get the grant from the State of Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission. Captain Alton Lenderman says the grant will help the department monitor underage drinking.

"Portable breath tests cost about $800 a piece so we're hoping to get one for each supervisor that way if we are out in the field or let's say at what they call a pasture party where a lot of minors are at, we can spot check and see who is sitting around and drinking and take the appropriate action," Lenderman said.

Lenderman says that minors always deny they are under the influence but the devices will allow law enforcement to make sure everyone gets home safe.
