DPS releases name of officer, suspect in Alto shooting

ALTO, TX (KTRE) - The Department of Public Safety has released the name of the two men involved in an police officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release, Alto resident James Eric Griffin, 48, was fatally shot by Officer Brandon Michael Smith.

DPS spokeswoman Jean Dark said around 4:30  Wednesday afternoon, Griffin attempted to rob Pick N Go, located at 100 S. Marcus Street, in Alto. Smith confronted Griffin on Highway 69, where an exchange took place.

Officials are still investigating whether or not the suspect had a weapon and how many shots were fired.

Dark said the Texas Rangers' investigation is still in the beginning stages and they will be collecting background information, talking to witnesses and reviewing the scene before they present their case.

Alto Police Chief Jeremy Jackson said the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Dark said an autopsy on the body of the suspect is being performed at Dallas Forensic Center.

Mamadu Meaye was working when the suspect came in. He did not want to appear on camera but he said "this guy asked for some cigarettes and when I gave him the cigarettes and started taking off with them and I said hey man what about the money."

The clerk then said the man turned around, lifted up his shirt and showed a very long machete. The clerk said he could have the cigarettes  for free and called the police.
