Whitehouse group turns in voter signatures supporting beer/wine sales

WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) -

A group pushing for beer and wine sales in Whitehouse turned in their petition to the city Friday morning.

The Whitehouse Committee for Growth says they have 1,000 signatures in support of beer and wine sales for off-premise consumption in the Whitehouse city limits. They say 850 of those signatures are verified. The city says they need to verify at least 762 signatures, themselves, before the option can be put on the ballot this May.

The Whitehouse Committee for Growth says the city is losing tax revenue to neighboring cities.

"With us surrounded by other towns that can sell beer and wine... we don't have that opportunity," says Phil Rogers

The group also says their close proximity to the lake would have a positive effect on sales tax revenue.

"The people who are going to the lake this summer... We are missing out on a great opportunity for revenue where no infrastructure has to be set in place," Rogers says.

If enough signatures are verified, the issue will go before the city council in February.

In 2010, Whitehouse residents voted against allowing beer and wine sales in the city.

Another petition with signatures in favor of beer and wine sales in Smith County Precinct One is expected to be turned in over the weekend. Precinct One is mainly the City of Tyler, but also includes small areas to the north, west and south of the city limits.
