Zavalla's Jan West gets 500th career win

ZAVALLA, TX (KTRE) - Friday night was a big one at Zavalla High School. Not only was it the Eagles homecoming night, but girls head coach Jan West reached a career milestone. With the Lady Eagles 50-28 win over West Sabine Coach West secured her 500th career win.

As time ticked down West was still coaching her team hard. But after the buzzer, it was all smiles as West was presented with the game ball from her four seniors.

"It is really special because it is a big milestone and these kids have been great and they have given me lots of opportunities to win ball games," said West. "It is a pretty big deal. I haven't thought about it much, but the number itself is a lot when you start counting."

West has coaches for 27 years and every single one of her 500 wins came as a coach at Zavalla High School. In a day when coaches come and go fairly often, West says she never thought twice about her years of dedication.

"I don't know that I ever really thought about it," said West. "I think I just got up and came to work everyday and the next thing I knew 27 years had gone by."

The win over West Sabine keeps the Lady Eagles undefeated in district play at 7-0. Next up, a game with San Augustine. A win there would clinch the district title for West and the Lady Eagles.
