I had the occasion to go to Austin recently and hear from state lawmakers what some of the agenda items are for the state legislature over the next months.
One of the items that may come up that was not in the briefing but will most likely be considered is a provision to make Texas an Open Carry state as it pertains to handguns. We are currently a concealed handgun state meaning, with a license, you can carry a handgun on your person or in your car as long as it is concealed out of sight.
Several states including Oklahoma are open carry states, meaning you can carry your weapon in plain sight. There are a load of rules on how this is done effectively, but it remains to be seen if it is right for Texas.
There is a certain comfort in knowing that there is probably someone carrying a concealed firearm that is responsible and can counter someone with bad intentions. The potential problem is created when it becomes legal to carry in plain sight because there will conceivably be those that abuse that law as well and others that will use the law to provoke or intimidate.
Now, I say all that to present both sides of the issue and I believe it should be put to a vote in the Texas legislature if it is brought up. That makes it even more important to get to know your local representative and where they stand on issues that impact everyone.
So Open Carry or not for Texas, let the lawmakers decide and that will make for a better East Texas.
