PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The head of Arizona's prisons has made an exception to the grooming policy to accommodate a Sikh officer.

Ikhbinder Bassin has been an officer for 10 years.

The exemption means he can maintain his beard and wear a kara, which is a kind of bracelet.

Both are fundamental practices of the Sikh religion.

The officer worked with the Anti-Defamation League to get the exemption approved.
