ETX teens lead campaign to reach out to their homeless peers

HENDERSON, TX (KLTV) -

A non-profit organization called DoSomething.org is calling on teenagers to help make the world a better place.

The organization has several different campaigns that allow teens to become leaders in their community. Several local teenagers are bringing one of those campaigns to East Texas.

Jeans for teens. Give a pair for the ones in need.

We'll take capris and anything in between.

It will be greatly appreciated.

Old ones, new ones, even the ones that are faded.

That is a poem Melanie Luna's friend wrote about the campaign she is bringing to Henderson High School. The campaign is called Teens for Jeans.

"I want every teenager out there to have a pair of jeans," Luna says.

Luna signed up to get a free banner from DoSomething.org and asked her school to help her collect jeans for homeless teens in the United States.

"I want to make a difference today and every other day," says Luna.

According to DoSomething.org, jeans are the number one requested item by teens in homeless shelters.

Ivon Abeldano, also a student at Henderson High School, is helping Luna. She says teens need to realize they can make a difference.

"I'm pretty sure there's a lot of people that would like to help they just don't know where to start from," says Abeldano.

The two say people can help them by dropping off any pair of unwanted, gently used jeans. The girls have already donated more than 20 pairs of their own jeans.

"Look in your closet, look at what you have, and if you're going to donate it, donate it to someone that is in need," Abeldano says.

Luna says she hopes to inspire other teens to start similar campaigns. She is also planning on leading an anti-bullying campaign at her school.

If you would like to donate to Teens for Jeans, you can drop off any size and brand of jeans at Henderson High School. The school will be collecting jeans until February 10th. After that, the jeans will be taken to the Aeropostale at the Longview mall, shipped to New York, and distributed to homeless shelters across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
