PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Travelers at Phoenix-Sky Harbor International Airport were keeping a close eye on departures and arrivals as a massive winter storm bore down on the Northeast on Friday morning.

More than 2,900 flights across the nation were canceled by 6:15 a.m. MST, according to the website FlightAware.com.

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey was the hardest hit, as the storm was expected to drop up to 2 feet of snow in the area. Nearly 400 flights destined for Newark International were canceled while 286 flights originating at the airport were wiped off the boards.

New York City's LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports had 442 combined originating flights and 637 inbound flights canceled. Up to a foot of snow was expected in the New York area.

Hurricane force winds were anticipated in the Northeast as a storm front originating in the Gulf of Mexico was expected to collide with the front sweeping across the Northern states, according to the National Weather Service.

Sixteen flights originating in Phoenix and nine inbound flights were canceled.

United Airlines was the most affected across the nation with 474 overall cancellations, followed by Delta (304) and JetBlue (256). Southwest Airlines canceled 121 flights.
