JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -
Jasper
County fire crews spent hours Saturday night and early Sunday morning battling
a blaze a 45-year-old Vidor man allegedly set before burning himself to death.
"It was a
hot fire," Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman said. "It didn't cool off
enough for us to get to the body until this morning."
Newman
said, shortly before the fire, the man called friends and family members to
tell them he was going to kill himself. He said an empty gas can was found near
the man's body.
The fire
took place on a private property located about 12 miles northwest of Jasper,
and fire crews got there at about 9 .m. Saturday. Firefighters battled the
blaze until about 3 a.m., Newman said.
Newman
said it looked as though the man doused a big brush pile with gasoline, climbed
on top of it, and set it on fire.
