Sabine County Emergency Management Coordinator Larry Martin said he does not know if a tornado hit the area, but that he has only begun surveying the damage.
The storm hit around 1:40 p.m.
Martin said most of the damage is in the area of US 96, north of Pineland and FM 1 at West Strickland Crossing.
Residents in the area had only one thing on their mind.
"We're lucky, We heard it coming. I told my wife, my grandson and son-in-law, it's coming. You hear that train coming through the woods? It's coming," said Danny Welch.
After realizing his family was okay, Welch then turned his attention to his neighbor, Ms. Stringer.
"My family here in the house. When it died down I saw he's was messed up and went and checked on her and I stayed with her until the first responders got to her," Welch said. "I Just kept talking to her, making sure I had people coming to help her. I kept her awake to make sure she wasn't going out on me."
And while residents tried to cope with the news of Mrs. Stringer's passing, they also tried to think positive.
"It's sad about Mrs. Stringer passing away through this, but I think there is a lot of lucky people here," said Ms. Halloway.
The National Weather Service will not arrive on the scene until Friday morning, but residents in the area are positive this storm was a tornado.
""It sounded like a freight train coming down the road and we knew what it was when we heard that sound," said Skip Jones.
