Arizona Democrats seek to repeal immigration law

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

Democrats want the Arizona Legislature to repeal the state's widely-debated immigration law, but Republican leaders say no way.

State Sen. Steve Gallardo said Thursday his bill to repeal the immigration law has not gained traction in the Senate. House Rep. Sally Ann Gonzales said her bill seeking to do the same was never assigned to a committee.

Democratic lawmakers say Senate Bill 1070 hurt Arizona's reputation and scared off tourists. They say the law has stifled the state's economic recovery.

But Rep. John Kavanagh says the Democrats are sore losers and need to move on. He was one of the Republican leaders behind the immigration law passed in 2010.

Kavanagh says the law is a popular measure that helps deter illegal immigration.

Democrats hold little power in the Republican-led Legislature.
