SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A Walmart truck became wedged under a railroad crossing after its driver misread the height restriction sign Monday morning.

Marion County sheriff's deputies are now diverting traffic around River Road South and Orville Road South due to the truck crash.

A deputy first responded just before 9 a.m. and found a large semitruck and trailer wedged under the River Road railroad crossing about two miles east of Independence.

Glenn Bickford, the 63-year-old driver from Coos Bay, said he thought his truck and trailer would fit under the 12' 9" crossing, but it turns out he misread the sign.

The impact left the trailer wedged under the crossing at a 45-degree angle, blocking the road in both directions.

Deputies described the damage to the trailer as "major."

Prior to the crash, Bickford said he left the Walmart on South Commercial Street and used his truck's GPS to take him to the Walmart store in the Monmouth area for his next pickup.

The most direct route took him to Orville Road and River Road, where his 13' 6" tall trailer became stuck. Bickford said he was unfamiliar with the area. He was cited on a violation of road use limits.

The road is expected to be blocked for several hours.

No injuries were reported.
