Students could decide the future of UT Tyler football

Posted: Updated:

A common question asked around UT Tyler, 'When are they going to add football?'

UT Tyler's Student Government Association is discussing the possibility of holding a vote that would increase the school's intercollegiate athletic fee.  If students passed the vote, it could lead to Patriot football as early as 2015.

"Our student body has reached the point they would like the opportunity to discuss it and vote on it," said UT Tyler Assistant Athletic Director Peyton Lowe.  "The addition of football is not something the university can decide itself, it's something our student have to decide. The proposal that would be voted on in the fall would be to increase the intercollegiate athletics fee that every student pays, basically double that fee, which would enable us to consider the addition of football."

The fee increase would also allow the university to add a drill team and marching band. The UT Tyler SGA has yet to decide if a vote should take place.

If students did pass a vote to increase fees, The UT System Board of Regents would also have to approve the measure.
