The driver of a semi-truck was killed in a fiery crash that closed Interstate 10 at the Broadway Curve for a good part of Thursday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The driver has been identified as Arturo Munoz, 31, of Phoenix, according to DPS.
Three westbound lanes and all but two eastbound lanes were re-opened several hours after the 5:30 a.m. crash, according to an ADOT spokesman.
There was no estimate when the remainder of the freeway would open again.
A Department of Public Safety spokesman confirmed Munoz died in the crash and ensuing fire. The rig caught fire and the contents of the trailer burned after a car rear-ended the crashed tractor-trailer.
The rig's cab laid across the concrete median separating the eastbound and westbound lanes and the trailer has rolled onto its side.
Several people in other cars suffered minor injuries, a DPS spokesman said.
Eastbound I-10 was backed up to approximately the Salt River Bridge, the ADOT spokesman said. Drivers who would normally use eastbound I-10 should consider using the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway eastbound to Loop 101 southbound, then taking the Loop 202 Santan Freeway westbound to return to I-10, the spokesman said.
Motorists were urged to plan their trips and exit well ahead of the closure to avoid traffic backups.
