PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Valley woman kidnapped by a bail recovery agent is paying it forward to the police detective who counseled her back to life.

"He showed me that I shouldn't have to live in fear anymore," Kimberly Reid said.

On Nov. 28, 2011, she was kidnapped by men who dragged her off the street and threw her into their car.

She did her best to hold onto the wheel well, but the force in which they pulled her nearly ripped off her fingers.

"All I kept telling myself is, 'just fight 'em. Do not let them get me in the vehicle. Don't let them get me in the vehicle,'" Reid said.

For a few terrifying moments, Reid was repeatedly shocked with a stun gun in the car by Michael Sellers and threatened at gunpoint by Christopher Salinas, Jr. before she was able to jump out of the car and run to a nearby policeman.

Little did she know, her battle was just beginning.

"Being kidnapped and going through what I went through, I barricaded myself in the house. I couldn't leave my house for three months. I hid. I moved constantly. I changed my phone number constantly.

Reid's fear was debilitating, but through it all, from the moment he first visited her at the hospital, Phoenix police detective Alfredo Richards did everything he could to make her feel safe and make sure her kidnappers faced justice.

"He gave me that feeling of strength," Reid said. "He always reassures me that I'm going to be OK, and I think that's what I need to hear."

Reid said she thanked him numerous times but never felt like it was enough.

"I'm here to pay it forward ... for all your hard work on the case, for being there for me," Reid told Richard.

"You are the one who gave me the courage to go back out in the environment instead of hiding all the time and being scared," Reid said.

The $500 she handed Richard didn't stay in his hands for long. He quickly paid it forward to the Police Officers Union Charities. For him, the sediment was enough.

"It was, well, it left me kind of speechless. It was great. It was a great feeling to see how far she has come and how we could help her as a police department get through this horrific event that she went through," Richard said.

"I don't think any other detective would have done what he's done to me," Reid said.

The bail recovery agent, Michael Sellers said he tried to take Reid into custody by mistake.

He was sentenced to three months in jail for kidnapping.

His accomplice, Christopher Salinas, Jr., was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
