EL MIRAGE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 24-year-old El Mirage man was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of beating and burning his 2-year-old daughter.

James O'Mahoney was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on one count of child abuse.

The child's mother told police she went to pick up her daughter at O'Mahoney's home after she spent the night there.

When the woman got her daughter home, she noticed a bump on her child's forehead and some bruises on her body, according to El Mirage Police Detective Kim Walden.

She called O'Mahoney, who told her the child fell off a bed. Later, she said she noticed more extensive bruising and called the police.

A medical examination revealed a bruise on the child's forehead, torso and back, and a burn on one hand consistent with a cigarette burn, Walden said.

The youngster had no internal injuries, and a series of X-rays showed no abnormalities, police said. The attending physician said the injuries were consistent with physical abuse, Walden said.
