LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Friday is National Colon Cancer Awareness Day and a reminder for men and women over the age of 50 to make sure they take preventative measures.

Medical Director at the Arthur Temple Senior Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital, Dr. Sid Roberts says 400,000 lives could be saved by the year 2020 if everyone got their recommended colonoscopy screening.

Roberts said, "Colon cancer is one of those unique cancers that is preventable and if people would take the time and do their screening colonoscopy's and get rid of polyps that are pre-cancerous then they could actually prevent cancer.

Dr. Roberts says you only have to do a screening every 10 years if your colonoscopy comes back negative for any pre-cancerous polyps.
