CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

General Motors is hiring about 1,000 people to work in a new innovation center in Chandler.

Gov. Jan Brewer was joined by Chandler mayor Jay Tibshraeny and officials from the Arizona Commerce Authority and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council when she made the announcement in Chandler on Wednesday.

Chandler officials say the project will bring hundreds of high-wage jobs to the city and millions in capital investment.

GM said they chose Chandler because of the region's pool of talented information technology workers.

They also like how Arizona's universities offer what they call a steady stream of a new graduates.

Hiring will start in April.

They will work in a temporary center until the new $21 million facility is open next year.

They hope to be fully staffed in five years.
