iaedp Foundation to Reveal Winner of Body Image Art Competition at 27th Annual Symposium

PEKIN, Ill., March 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals is proud to announce the top five finalists for the 2013 "Image Me Beyond What You See" body image mannequin art competition. Selected from a record 13 submissions from treatment centers, private practices and individuals from around the world, this year's entries captivated its distinguished judging panel. The winner will be revealed at the 2013 iaedp Symposium held at the Westin Resort in Lake Las Vegas on March 21-24.

The mixed-medium works were judged on clarity of theme, creativity and originality, quality of composition and design and the overall impression and presentation of the artwork. The following have been selected as the top five finalists:

1. Blackbird by Kathleen D'Orazio /New Mexico
   This piece was inspired in part by Paul McCartney's lyrics to the song, "Blackbird." An eating disorder can put you in a cage and you hold the key to your freedom.
2. Blossoming Into Beauty : A Journey to Self  by Cambridge Eating Disorders Center/Massachusetts
   The mannequin holds a lotus flower - symbolic of the human condition across many cultures and religions.
3. Can You See Me Now?  by Jen Foote /Canada
   The mannequin wears a body suit representing her physical body and outward appearance. The large zipper is meant to emphasize the removal of this outer layer.
4. True Beauty Has No Label by Eating Disorders Program (Ministry of Child and Youth)/British Columbia
   The mannequin is used as a platform to rework figurative and commercial ideals of beauty.
5. Uli by RainRock Residential ED Treatment/Oregon
   The entry serves as a symbolic representation of a concept widely utilized at RainRock known as eating disorder side vs. healthy-self side.

Eating disorder pioneer, Lindsey Hall Cohn, and her husband Leigh Cohn, were among the six professionals who judged this year's competition. Lindsey wrote the first book on bulimia.

Other judges include Art Therapist and member of the American Art Therapy Association, Michelle Dean, Registered Drama Therapist Carol Dietrich, iaedp Past President and Psychodrama expert Mary Bellofatto and renowned photographic fine artist Fritz Liedtke.
